Congressman Garcia Votes Against Impeachment Of President Trump

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, voted against impeaching President Donald Trump Wednesday after legislators accused the president of endangering  “the security of the United States” in the wake of last week’s assault on the U.S. Capitol.

On Wednesday, Garcia voted against one article of impeachment against President Trump that ultimately passed 232-197, with four Republican abstaining.

“In Congress, my priority is working to advance commonsense, bipartisan policies that improve the lives of Californians and all Americans and help to safely open up our businesses and get employees back to work. The only way we can do this is to move forward together as one nation,” Garcia said in a statement after the vote. “With only a few days left in the Trump Administration, the vote to impeach the President is no more than political theater that runs the risk of further dividing us at a time when we need to come together. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to stop playing political games and start advancing good policy solutions.”

The impeachment effort is the second to pass against the president in the past 13 months, and comes a week after hundreds of pro-Trump protestors gathered in front of the Capitol, with many breaching the doors during Congressional session and clashing with police.

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness,” Trump told the protestors at a rally prior to the incident. “You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

Lawmakers argue that Trump’s rhetoric leading up to the incident at the nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6 “gravely endangered the security of the United States and its institutions of government.”

“(Trump) threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of Government,” the impeachment resolution reads. “He thereby betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.”

The attack on the Capitol came the morning that Congress was scheduled to vote to certify the electoral college results, officially naming Joe Biden as President-elect, which Garcia also voted against.

“Americans have a right to free and fair elections. We must remember, the Presidency belongs not to Congress, it belongs to the American people. However, when threats of fraud arise regarding the results of the election, per the laws written in the Constitution, America’s elected Congressional Representatives must ensure that any uncertainty is resolved,” Garcia said in a statement at the time. “My objection to the electoral votes of two states was not in an attempt to overturn the results of the election, it was to fulfill my duty to protect the rights of the men and women of California’s 25th District who elected me to serve them and stand up for their rights.”
