Congressman Garcia Calls For Protesters To ‘Immediately Cease’ After Storming Capitol Building

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, has called for protesters to “immediately cease your operations” after hundreds of rioters have charged the United States Capitol on Wednesday, locking the building down.

In response to the discussion Wednesday for Congress to ratify the Electoral College vote for President-Elect Joe Biden, hundreds of pro-Trump protesters have gathered in front of the Capitol, with many breaching the doors during Congressional session and clashing with police.

“What is happening in the Capitol today is unacceptable and tragic to our nation’s Integrity. I call for those engaged in storming Congress to immediately cease your operations,” Garcia said on Twitter. “Allow our Constitutional processes to proceed and allow our security guards and our staff to go home safely to their families.”

President Donald Trump also took to Twitter Wednesday asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful.

“No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you,” Trump said.

Vice President Mike Pence told Congress earlier Wednesday that he does not believe he has the ability to “unilaterally” accept or reject electoral votes, despite pressure from President Trump.

In a letter to members of Congress, Pence said he shares the “concerns of millions of Americans about the integrity of this election.”

“Overrunning the People’s House is not the way. Peaceful protest and meaningful debate on the floor is what is needed,” Garcia said. “We have neither right now. This behavior isn’t patriotism. It’s sedition.”

Garcia said in a statement on Monday he is going to tote to reject some of the states’ electoral votes when Congress formally counts the Electoral College votes

The Santa Clarita congressman did not identify which specific states’ votes he would vote to reject, but referenced “at least six consequential swing states,” in which he believes “state election laws were fundamentally altered by bureaucrats outside of the state legislatures and in contravention of the explicit power granted to those state legislatures by the Federal Constitution,” according to the statement released Monday.

“I do believe there is enough evidence of compromised processes and break downs in election integrity by certain state legislatures that do in fact warrant a closer examination,” wrote Garcia. “I have examined all available evidence in several states currently being disputed, and I have digested the constitutional arguments from both sides of this discussion. We are clearly in the midst of a constitutional collision.”

The evidence referenced in the statement is not explicitly identified by Garcia.

In his statement, Garcia calls for a full audit of several states to “ensure all Americans have confidence in our elections.”

Garcia joins a number of Congressional Republicans who plan to challenge the election results on Wednesday, including at least 12 senators.

“The vote on 6 January is not about Trump versus Biden or left versus right. It is about seeking assured security,” Garcia wrote. “Assured security not only for the last election but more importantly for future elections. Assured security in knowing that not only will every legitimate vote be counted, but also that every illegitimate and fraudulent vote will NOT be counted.”
