Stevenson Ranch Teen Completes Girl Scout Gold Award

Local Stevenson Ranch resident and Girl Scout Riley Blaugrund recently earned the Gold Award through her project that services foster children in Los Angeles County.

Blaugrund is a senior at West Ranch and has been with the Girl Scouts for 13 years. For her Girl Scout Gold Award, she focused on the experiences of foster children in her community.

In L.A. County alone there are around 33,000 children in the foster system, with shelter care at the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court seeing 60 to 90 foster children daily. These children spend hours waiting to see judges, lawyers and arranging custody schedules daily. Blaugrund’s project aims to make these children’s experiences in dependency court easier.

The project of remodeling the media room in the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court, which is located in Monterey Park, required raising money and gathering donations. Through these funds the remodeling of a more interactive and organized media room was implemented, including framed movie posters, a treasure box and DVDs for the children.

According to Blaugrund, she wanted to “make their time in dependency court more positive by helping the children access their creativity and imagination.” The renovations include educational aspects of writing, directing and performing plays.

Additionally, she and a group of friends painted a mural depicting a message of hope for adults and children. The mural includes a quote by Randi G. Fine, stating “Hope is the promise that anything is possible.” This mural is located so it is the last thing families see as they exit the shelter care division.

The Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, requires an 80-hour sustainable community service project.

“My Gold Award is by far one of my favorite experiences I have had as a Girl Scout and as a high school student. I was able to directly create and influence positive change in my community through this project, and I am so thankful for the opportunity,” said Blaugrund.
