Santa Clarita To Be Monitored For Public Safety Power Shutoffs Through Christmas Eve

Southern California Edison (SCE) officials are set to monitor several parts of the Santa Clarita Valley through Christmas Eve to determine whether or not to instate Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

SCE officials are set to monitor several areas in Canyon Country, Castaic, Val Verde and the northeastern portion of Saugus for the potential implementation of PSPS.

“When forecasts indicate elevated weather conditions, we’ll begin assessing the potential impact to affected areas,” a statement from the SCE website reads. “We’ll analyze historical data to help predict the likelihood of a wildfire occurring, closely monitor weather watch alerts from the National Weather Service, and place incident responders on alert, if needed.”

The areas set to be monitored as of Tuesday afternoon can be seen below.

The above areas are set to be monitored for potential PSPS starting at 3 a.m. Wednesday and lasting until either noon or 3 p.m. Christmas Eve, depending on the specific area.

This marks the sixth time that areas of the Santa Clarita Valley have been under consideration for PSPS in the month of December alone.

If a PSPS is instated in any of the monitored areas, SCE officials say that Community Crew Vehicles and Community Resource Centers will be made available to support customers in impacted areas.

“We observe physical distancing practices and provide Customer Resiliency Kits, which include PSPS information, light snacks, water, small resiliency devices, and personal protection equipment,” a statement from the SCE Outage Center site reads.
