Nearly 30,000 COVID-19 Cases Reported In L.A. County After Service Delay

Nearly 30,000 new COVID-19 cases, along with over 130 new COVID-19 deaths were reported in Los Angeles County Saturday after a service interruption prevented health officials from reporting numbers the day before.

An additional 29,464 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Saturday, along with 136 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

A breakdown shows that 13,185 cases come from Saturday and 15,538 cases from Friday, along with 131 deaths from Friday and five deaths reported Saturday.

The larger numbers are due in part to a service outage that the LADPH experienced Friday, resulting in officials reporting two days-worth of new COVID-19 cases and deaths on Saturday.

Yesterday’s case numbers were delayed due to the service interruption caused by an outage with Spectrum Service in the Los Angeles area,” reads a statement issued by the LADPH on Saturday. “The number of deaths reported today are an undercount due to the reporting lag associated with the Spectrum outage and the Christmas holiday.”

The additional cases reported Saturday bring the county’s cumulative total to 706,448 along with a total of 9,438 deaths since March, according to the department.

As of Saturday, there were 6,770 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 20 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the State, as of Thursday, Dec. 24, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

Health officials say that at its current rate, one person in Los Angeles County dies of COVID-19 every 10 minutes, as of Saturday afternoon.

“Many of these tragic deaths stemming from COVID-19 were preventable,” said Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda Solis in a statement Saturday. “Our collective focus should be on taking all steps necessary to reduce transmission of this virus.”

On Saturday, 537 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 15,205 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since testing began in March, according to the LADPH.

It should be noted that these new numbers are the combination of Friday and Saturday, as the LADPH has not provided a breakdown for individual cities and areas for Friday’s numbers alone.

These cases include:

  • 10,903 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+449)
  • 450 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+11)
  • 2,840 in Castaic* (+37)
  • 77 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus (+5)
  • 557 in Stevenson Ranch (+26)
  • 95 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia

  • 22 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon

  • Eight in unincorporated Sand Canyon
  • Five in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon (+1)

In nearby Acton, there have been 241 (+10) cumulative cases, as well as 119 (+6) cases in Agua Dulce.

*As of Wednesday, Dec. 23, public health officials have recorded 1,952 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,422 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

The larger numbers are due in part to a service outage that the LADPH experienced Friday, resulting in officials reporting two days-worth of new COVID-19 cases and deaths on Saturday.

As of Thursday, Dec. 24, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital had conducted 14,709 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 2,195 had tested positive, and 16 tests were still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

There were 85 patients in the hospital as of Thursday, Dec. 24, while 602 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

Five additional deaths were reported Thursday, with the number of COVID-19 patients more than doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 65 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 103 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.
