L.A. County COVID-19 Hospitalizations Continue To Reach New Heights, Santa Clarita Tops 13K Cases


As Los Angeles County COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to reach record-breaking heights, the cumulative coronavirus cases total for the Santa Clarita Valley has topped 13,000. 

There are 5,100 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Friday, 20 percent of which are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The number of patients hospitalized has tripled over the past month and a half, while the number of deaths has quadrupled, according to the department.

The number of hospitalizations is over twice the peak of 2,232 people hospitalized with COVID-19 during the July surge. The daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased nearly every day since Nov. 1, when the daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 799.

As of last week, the five-day average for daily new cases reported with COVID-19 is 10,284, over double the five-day average for daily new cases the county saw just a month ago.

An additional 16,504 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Friday, along with 96 deaths, according to Public Health.

The additional cases reported Friday bring the county’s cumulative total to 596,721, along with a total of 8,757 deaths since March, according to the department.

The State stay-at-home order went into effect at midnight on Dec. 6, and remains in effect for at least three weeks in California regions where ICU capacity falls below 15%.

According to the State, as of Friday, Dec. 18, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

On Friday, 247 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 13,010 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH). These cases include:

  • 9,093 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+200)
  • 384 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+8)
  • 2,675 in Castaic* (+18)
  • 60 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 465 in Stevenson Ranch (+12)
  • 86 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia (+4)
  • 144 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • 51 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall (+1)
  • 19 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon (+1)
  • 21 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country (+3)
  • Eight in unincorporated Sand Canyon
  • Four in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon

In nearby Acton, there have been 194 (+2) cumulative cases, as well as 96 (+5) cases in Agua Dulce.

*As of Wednesday, Dec. 16, public health officials have recorded 1,939 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,410 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

As of Friday, Dec. 18, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 14,110 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 1,936 have tested positive, and 24 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

There are 79 patients in the hospital as of Friday, Dec. 18, while 538 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

10 additional deaths have been reported this week, with the number of COVID-19 patients more than doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 57 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 95 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.
