UPDATE: Northbound 5 Freeway Lanes In Grapevine Reopened, Southbound Lanes To Open Soon After Big Rig Fire

All lanes of the 5 Freeway are closed in the Grapevine Wednesday afternoon due to a big rig fire that spread to the brush, officials said.

UPDATE 4:15 p.m.: Northbound traffic is being escorted is being escorted by California Highway Patrol units and “one or two southbound lanes are expected to be open as soon as possible,” according to CHP officials.

The fire was first reported at about 2:10 p.m. Wednesday on the southbound 5 Freeway south of Grapevine Road, according to Sgt. Phipps with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Fort Tejon Area Office.

“We are checking out the load to see if it is hazardous,” Phipps said.

Initial reports indicated the truck was carrying electrical transformers, with CHP officers ensuring the load was not compromised, according to Phipps.

Due to heavy smoke, all southbound lanes were first closed, with the northbound lanes later closed as well, according to CHP logs.

The southbound I-5 is closed at Grapevine Road with the northbound I-5 closed at Fort Tejon, according to Phipps.

Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) firefighters responded to the scene and reported the fire had spread to the brush.

As of 3:30 p.m., the northbound closure is estimated to be about 30 minutes longer, with the southbound closure closed for approximately tw0-three more hours.
