Host: May Ronci, Nurse Practitioner and Executive Director at Traditions Health; Jim Holloway, Vice President of Operations in California

Guest: Dr. Balbir Brar, MD

On this episode of the Traditions Healthcare Hospice Hour, with May Ronci, Nurse Practitioner and Executive Director at Traditions Health, and Jim Holloway, Vice President of Operations in California, Dr. Balbir Brar, MD. joins the show to talk in detail about the principles of hospice care and who needs it. May, Jim, and Dr. Brar talk about how family is included in hospice care by definition and that the entire family unit is included in as much as possible.

Dr. Brar takes time talking about who enrolls in hospice more than others, and highlights that a lot of people come from the ICU in a hospital. Dr. Brar also explains how to apply for hospice care, and that a patient should start request for palliative care. Sometimes, a family member or attending physician will make the suggestion to apply for hospice, but it is up to the patient to put in the request.

Later in the show, Dr. Brar addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and shares information and observations that he has learned and seen since the pandemic first reached the U.S. in March. Dr. Brar comments on how healthcare at  large has learned so much that is unteachable in hypothetical scenarios, and that the impact to the world has been devastating. Dr. Brar highlights that our preparedness for future pandemics has increased significantly and will help reduce the impact that future viruses or similar outbreaks may cause.  Dr. Brar concludes by talking about the challenge of who will get the vaccine first, and also speaks on the similarities and differences between hospice care and palliative care.
