Santa Clarita Named 5th Safest Large City In California

Santa Clarita has been named the 5th safest large city in California, according to a recent study.

AdvisorSmith, an insurance research website, released its newest report on the Safest Cities in California on Tuesday with Santa Clarita among the top communities in the state.

The study analyzed violent and property crimes from 74 large cities, 294 midsize cities, and 92 small cities in the state. Crime scores were calculated for each city and the cities were ranked to find the safest places in California.

Large cities were considered to have a population of above 100,000 residents, with the Santa Clarita population estimated to be over 213,000, according to the most recent data from the City.

Santa Clarita had a total crime score of 20.9, which was well below the average of 56.9 in large California cities with over 100,000 residents, according to the study.

The violent crime rate in Santa Clarita was 4.2 per 1,000 residents, compared with an average of 10.1 per 1,000 in large California cities, according to researchers.

The city’s property crime rate was 9.4 per 1,000 residents. Statewide, the average property crime rate in large cities was 24.2 per 1,000, the study said.

Thousand Oaks came in at No. 1 in the study for the safest large cities in California, with Simi Valley, Murrietta and Irvine rounding out the top four.

Santa Clarita was ranked higher than other cities in Southern California including Glendale, Orange and Torrance.
