Record Number Of COVID-19 Cases, Deaths Reported In Los Angeles County Amid ‘Explosive’ Surge


Over 21,000 new cases of COVID-19 cases were reported within Los Angeles County Wednesday, along with over 130 COVID-19-related deaths, marking the highest daily number for both metrics.

An additional 22,422 coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Wednesday, along with 138 deaths, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“I want to acknowledge that we’re experiencing an explosive and very deadly surge and there’s urgency in our request that everyone does all that’s in their power to slow transmission and prevent additional suffering,” Ferrer said Wednesday.

The additional cases reported Wednesday bring the county’s cumulative total to 566,005, along with a total of 8,568 deaths since March, according to the department.

The additional cases and deaths reported Wednesday come after an estimated 7,000-case backlog due to a delay from one lab, according to the department.

There were 4,656 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday, 21 percent of which are in the ICU, according to the Public Health.

The number of patients hospitalized has tripled over the past month, while the number of deaths has quadrupled, according to the department.

The number of hospitalizations is over twice the peak of 2,232 people hospitalized with COVID-19 during the July surge. The daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased nearly every day since Nov. 1, when the daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 799.

As of last week, the five-day average for daily new cases reported with COVID-19 is 10,284, over double the five-day average for daily new cases the county saw just a month ago.

The State stay-at-home order went into effect at midnight on Dec. 6, and remains in effect for at least three weeks in California regions where ICU capacity falls below 15%.

According to the State, as of Wednesday, Dec. 16, the Southern California Region has 0.5% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

Over 4,148,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Wednesday, with about 12 percent of those tests returning positive.

On Wednesday, the largest single day spike for the Santa Clarita Valley was reported with 357 new COVID-19 cases, with 12,543 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH). These cases include:

  • 8,723 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+290)
  • 368 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+10)
  • 2,623 in Castaic* (+31)
  • 59 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 449 in Stevenson Ranch (+14)
  • 80 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia (+2)
  • 143 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde (+4)
  • 50 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall (+6)
  • 18 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • 18 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Eight in unincorporated Sand Canyon
  • Four in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon

In nearby Acton, there have been 188 cumulative cases, as well as 89 cases in Agua Dulce.

*As of Tuesday, Dec. 15, public health officials have recorded 1,939 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,410 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

As of Wednesday, Dec. 16, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 13,926 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 1,862 have tested positive, and seven tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are 82 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, Dec. 16, while 517 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

Five additional deaths were have been reported this week with the number of COVID-19 patients doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 52 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 90 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.
