Independent Voters Leaned Republican In 2020 Santa Clarita Elections

Voters turned out in record numbers for Santa Clarita elections in 2020, with no-party-preference (NPP) voters leaning towards Republican candidates in several key races.

Over the past week, Los Angeles, Ventura and San Bernardino Counties certified their election results, marking the conclusion of several key races for the Santa Clarita Valley in 2020.

After going through 30 years of voter data provided by the California Secretary of State, KHTS has compiled several graphs to help break down and provide insight into who participated in elections pertinent to Santa Clarita.

All three of the key races examined below saw record-high voter turnout, which can be attributed to a variety of factors, including increasing population numbers and expanded window for people to vote.

Additionally, data shows that voters registered as either NPP or any other political party other than Republican and Democratic tended to vote in favor of Republican candidates. All three races below saw Repubican candidates receive more votes than the number of registered Republican voters, and Democratic candidates received less than the total number of registered Democrat voters.

25th Congressional District (CA-25)

Out of the 444,009 registered voters in CA-25 as of Oct. 19, approximately 76.3% participated in the 2020 election between Republican incumbent Congressman Mike Garcia and Democratic Assemblywoman Christy Smith.

This represents nearly a 30% increase in voter turnout compared to the district’s previous record in 2016, when 261,161 people voted in the election that saw then Republican Congressman Steve Knight win his first bid for re-election.

In 2020, Garcia won his bid for re-election by an estimated 0.1% of the vote in the closest Congressional race for the district in the past 30 years.

The full results can be viewed below.

Mike Garcia – R – Incumbent 169,638 — 50.05%
Christy Smith – D

169,305 — 49.95%

Garcia earned more total votes than the number of registered Republicans in the district, which accounts for just under 32% of the voter pool, while Smith earned just under 5,000 votes less than the total number of registered Democratic voters in CA-25.

This would indicate that more of roughly 22.7% of NPP voters sided with Garcia in the 2020 election than they did for Smith. A full breakdown of the number of registered voters can be viewed below

21st State Senate District (SD-21)

Out of the 549,549 registered voters in SD-21 as of Oct. 19, approximately 71.4% participated in the 2020 election between Republican incumbent Senator Scott Wilk and Democratic challenger Kipp Mueller.

This represents a little over a 28% increase in voter turnout compared to the district’s previous record in 2008, when 306,104 people voted in the election that saw Democrat Carol Liu win with just over two-thirds of the total vote.

It should be noted that voter turnout for SD-21 is historically larger than other races pertinent to the Santa Clarita Valley, as it not only has the largest pool of voters, but also coincides with presidential election years, which generally see larger turnouts than both primary and midterm elections.

In 2020, Wilk won his bid for re-election by an estimated 1.6% of the vote in one of the closest races for the district in the past 30 years.

The full results can be viewed below.

Scott Wilk – R – Incumbent 199,342 — 50.78%
Kipp Mueller – D

193,202 — 49.22%

Wilk earned more total votes than the number of registered Republicans in the district, which accounts for just under 30% of the voter pool, while Mueller earned over 20,000 votes less than the total number of registered Democratic voters in SD-21.

This would indicate that more of roughly 21.3% of NPP voters sided with Wilk in the 2020 election than they did for Mueller. A full breakdown of the number of registered voters can be viewed below

38th State Assembly District (AD-38)

Out of the 319,139 registered voters in AD-38 as of Oct. 19, approximately 61.4% participated in the 2020 election between Republicans Suzette Martinez-Valladares and Lucie Volotzky.

This represents a near 0.7% increase in voter turnout compared to the district’s previous record in 2016, when 194,778 people voted in the election that saw Republican Dante Acosta win with just under 53% of the total vote.

It should be noted that the increase in voter turnout for AD-38 is lower than CA-25 and SD-21, which may be due to the fact that two Republicans were running, which may have discouraged some Democratic voters from participating in the race.

In 2020, Valladares won her bid for the assembly seat by an estimated 76.1% of the vote.

The full results can be viewed below.

Suzette Martinez-Valladares – R 149,201 — 76.09%
Lucie Volotzky – R

46,877 — 23.91%

Valladares earned more total votes than the number of registered Republicans in the district, which accounts for just under 34% of the voter pool, while Volotzky only earned just under 47,000 total votes.

This would indicate that more of roughly 23.1% of NPP voters sided with Valladares in the 2020 election than they did for Volotzky. A full breakdown of the number of registered voters can be viewed below
