A Canyon Country child endangerment suspect was arrested Monday evening after his son allegedly found firework mortars and lit them off in the bathroom.
On Monday around 8 p.m. first responders received reports of a structure fire in the 27000 block of Silver Oak Lane in Canyon Country, said Leslie Lua, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“There was no confirmed fire, nothing was showing and units quickly were released,” Lua said.
However, during the investigation it was determined that an 11-year-old found firework mortars in his father’s closet and reportedly lit one off in the bathroom, said Sgt. Jeff Moore, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Arson and Explosive Bureau.
“It shattered the medicine cabinet door, the bathroom mirror and broke open the bathroom sinks,” Moore said. “The firework went into the ceiling and the wall.”
Investigators located additional fireworks in the bathroom and more fireworks in the suspect’s closet, according to officials.
The suspect reportedly told investigators he found the fireworks in the trash and took them home, according to Moore.
The 11-year-old victim suffered minor burns as a result of the incident, according to officials.
Angel Acosta, 27, from Canyon Country was arrested for child endangerment and being in possession of fireworks without a permit, Moore added.
Acosta was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with bail set at $100,000, according to arrest records.
