Two DUI Suspects In Custody After Causing Injuries In Two Separate Crashes

Two DUI suspects were arrested Friday after they were involved in two separate injury crashes.

The first crash on Friday was reported around 6:48 a.m. on Copper Hill and Haskell Canyon Roads in Saugus regarding a traffic hazard medical emergency call, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“It was reported two adult males were unresponsive inside of a silver BMW,” Arriaga said.

Upon arrival, deputies observed that the BMW had crashed into a pole, according to Arriaga.

Two male adults and a female adult were standing next to a silver BMW, with an additional male seated inside the rear passenger seat with a laceration to his head.

“During (their) investigation, deputies learned a male adult 28 years old was the driver of the vehicle,” Arriaga said.

While speaking with the driver, deputies recognized a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Deputies performed field sobriety tests on the driver and determined he had been driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” Arriaga said.

The driver, Derrick Piper, 28, from Canyon Country was arrested for DUI causing injury. A male adult passenger was transported to a local hospital with a moderate injury.

The second DUI crash deputies responded to was around 5:50 p.m. on Soledad Canyon Road and River Circle in Canyon Country resulting in a pedestrian being struck.

“The pedestrian was hit while in the crosswalk,” said Lt. Ethan Marquez, for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, at the time of the crash.

When deputies arrived on scene of the crash, they noticed the driver of the vehicle, a purple Mazda, according to Arriaga.

Deputies conducted a field sobriety test and determined the driver had a blood alcohol content of .202, nearly triple the legal limit of 0.08, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Piper, who was involved in the Copper Hill Crash, and Cameron Perry, 44, who struck a pedestrian in Canyon Country were both arrested on felony DUI charges after causing injury, Arriaga added.

Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail.
