As the holiday season approaches the Santa Clarita Valley, locally-owned businesses are preparing for Small Business Saturday in the hopes of recouping financial losses sustained during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
On Saturday, Nov. 28, small businesses across the country are set to offer special deals and promotions as part of Small Business Saturday.
“It’s a great day to get out and see the small businesses in our community,” said Renee Kennedy, owner of Earth Baby Boutique in Newhall. “Even if they come and buy one small thing, it does help. It shows that the community wants small businesses to stay.”
People first began observing Small Business Saturday back in 2010, and has fallen on the last Saturday of the month of November ever since.
However, this year’s event is especially important for many locally-owned small businesses in Santa Clarita, as the shutdowns caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have cut their business down between 50 and 70 percent.
“Everyone has been hit by it,” said Chris Browning, owner of Mend Cryotherapy in Valencia. “I think that there’s going to be another wave of closures out here.”
COVID-19 cases have surged recently in Los Angeles County, prompting public health officials to consider reversing the re-opening process, which has many local business owners on edge.
“There is only so much that we can take,” said Greg Amsler, owner of Salt Creek Grille. “There’s a lot of people whose unemployment has run out. I don’t have anyone who has given me an answer on what to tell my staff if things keep going this way.”
In order to help residents participate in Small Business Saturday, below are some examples of how to support local business.
“You don’t need to go outside of Santa Clarita,” said Robert Reyes, owner of Reyes Winery “By supporting us, you’re not only getting a high-quality product, but you’re helping your local community.”
- Instead of shopping for baby supplies at a big-box store such as Wal-Mart, Target or buybuy Baby, head to EarthBaby Boutique, who is set to offer a variety of raffle prizes and deals for Small Business Saturday.
- Instead of getting coffee from a Starbucks, grab a cup at Honu Coffee or Havana Savannah.
- Instead of getting dinner from a large chain such as Olive Garden, Chipotle or a Red Robin, grab some food from Salt Creek Grille or Olive Terrace.
- Instead of grabbing drinks from a chain such as Chili’s Bar & Grill, head to Reyes Winery, who is set to offer 10 percent off all of their wines for the general public on Small Business Saturday, as well as a 20 percent discount for members of their wine club.
- Instead of buying a membership at a large gym such as 24 Hour Fitness or L.A. Fitness, try out a membership at Mend Cryotherapy, who is offering a wide variety of sales throughout the coming week on services and products geared towards treating stress and anxiety, as well as improving the immune system.
- Instead of getting a suit at a chain such as Men’s Warehouse, head over to J. David’s in Valencia for your men’s fashion needs.
