Several areas of the Santa Clarita Valley have been placed under consideration for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) Tuesday afternoon, including parts of Canyon Country and Castaic.
On Tuesday afternoon, SCE officials announced that several areas in the Santa Clarita Valley are under consideration for a PSPS until Saturday due to “strong winds that could pose a threat to power lines.”
A map of areas being considered for a PSPS can be viewed below.

As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, less than 5 percent of SCE’s five million customers were under consideration for a PSPS. These areas are set to be monitored until Saturday.
“During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires,” reads a statement previously issued by SCE. “Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers and our employees.”

The implementations of the outages are a result of strong winds and low humidity within the Santa Clarita Valley, with wind gusts as high as 60 mph.
The Santa Clarita Valley is set to be under a Red Flag Warning from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 10 p.m. Saturday.
“This is a particularly dangerous situation due to an unusual duration of extremely dry vegetation, strong winds, and very dry air leading to very critical fire weather conditions,” the warning reads.” Any new fire ignition in these areas will likely have very dangerous fire spread that could potentially threaten life and property.”
A High Wind Watch has also been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, lasting throughout Thursday and ending Friday afternoon.
