A Los Angeles County curfew is set to be put in place for restaurants and “non-essential” businesses countywide, including Santa Clarita, starting Friday as a result of surging coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, officials said Tuesday.
Starting Friday, all restaurants and businesses deemed “non-essential” within Los Angeles County are set to have a curfew imposed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to Michelle Vega, Communications Director of Supervisor Kathryn Barger.
This would be the second set of curfews put in place by Los Angeles County officials this year, with the first set coming in late-May and early-June along with a state of emergency after looting and other crime were reported across the county as demonstrators.
The curfew comes on the heels of a rise in reported hospitalizations and positive cases over the weekend, with over 1,000 people hospitalized and the highest one-day case report not associated with a backlog since July, according to the Department of Public Health.
“These are the highest numbers we’ve seen since July. We need everyone to buckle down again: If you’ve been slipping since March, it’s time to go back to what you were doing then,” cautioned Supervisor Janice Hahn in a tweet Monday.

Amid the increase, the county Department of Public Health is expected to submit a series of recommendations to the Board of Supervisors this week.
“Potential options could be instituting a curfew so businesses do not have to completely close down again, but are more limited to essential activities,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said Sunday in a statement.
In addition to the curfew, outdoor seating for restaurants are set to be reduced to 50 percent capacity starting Friday, along with office, retail and business reducing to 25 percent maximum capacity.
Additionally, residents must make an appointment in advance in order to partake in personal services such as nail salons and barbershops within Los Angeles County. All gatherings are limited to a maximum of 15 people from up to three different households.
