Jason Gibbs is projected to win in the race for the second seat up for grabs on the Santa Clarita City Council after his nearest opponent Kelvin Driscoll congratulated Gibbs Wednesday.
Gibbs, who received just over 16% of the overall vote with 28,760 as of the last update from Los Angeles County Tuesday, is projected to win after Driscoll called Gibbs to congratulate him Wednesday.
“It’s a little surreal to be honest. We’ve been campaigning for what’s been at least three years now,” Gibbs said in a phone call with KHTS Wednesday evening. “Now it’s time to serve the people of Santa Clarita.”
Driscoll, who had earned the third-most number of votes as of Tuesday, reportedly reached out to both Gibbs and incumbent Mayor Cameron Smyth, who retained his seat on the Santa Clarita City Council in record-breaking fashion.
“Kelvin was always a gentleman, he was always classy,” Gibbs said. “It was extremely gracious of him to reach out and to wish us success.”
In an email Thursday, Driscoll thanked his supporters and congratulated both Smyth and Gibbs on their victories.
“While this is not the outcome that so many worked so hard for, I am extremely proud of this campaign and those that powered it,” Driscoll wrote. “Thank you to our supporters and everyone who cast their vote for my candidacy. Our campaign reflected the resilient hope that so many see for the future of our city. A future that puts our health first, houses the most vulnerable, prioritizes racial equity and values investment in infrastructure and people.”
Driscoll recognized the work his supporters put into his campaign as well as what his campaign meant for the City of Santa Clarita.

“Javaneh and I wish Mayor Smyth and Jason the best in their tenure,” he wrote, “We love this city, and as we continue working toward meaningful change, know that we’re rooting for our collective success.”

While Gibbs did not officially declare victory Wednesday, he said that he felt “extremely good” about where he was in the standings.
“(I) feel confidant that when the final ballots are read, we will have earned a seat on the council,” Gibbs said.
