Jason Gibbs continues to maintain his lead for the second open seat on the Santa Clarita City Council, while incumbent Mayor Cameron Smyth retained the first seat in record-breaking fashion.
As of 4:15 p.m. Monday, Gibbs held a 3,003-vote lead over Kelvin Driscoll, with the two currently earning the second and third largest number of votes in Santa Clarita City Council race.
Two spots on the council were up for grabs as part of the 2020 election, with the two individuals who earned the most votes out of the field of nine candidates earning those seats.
Smyth retained his seat in a strong way, earning 55,091 votes, which accounts for over 31% of the total vote and stands at nearly twice as many votes as Gibbs.
This number is a new record within Santa Clarita politics, marking the most votes that a Santa Clarita City Council candidate has received in an election. The previous record came in 2016, when Councilmember Bob Kellar earned 32,216 votes.

Kellar’s seat was also up for reelection in 2020, with 20-year veteran of the council announcing his political retirement. He endorsed Gibbs as his replacement.
When the first vote counts were reported at around 8:20 p.m. on Nov. 3, Driscoll held a slight lead over Gibbs, as the first round of reporting came from Democratic-leaning vote-by-mail ballots.
However, Gibbs gained the lead over Driscoll later that night, and by the following morning he had secured a lead of over 2,200 votes. Gibbs has maintained that lead ever since.
