On-Duty Santa Clarita Deputy Hospitalized For Accidental Fentanyl Overdose

A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy, who had allegedly been exposed to fentanyl while on duty, was transported to the hospital Saturday night after responding to a call for service at the Home Depot in Valencia.

Around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders received reports of a medical emergency at the Home Depot on Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia, according to Captain Norman Queen with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We responded to a possible overdose at 8:20 p.m.,” Queen said. “The probable cause has been listed as fentanyl.”

The deputy, who had been called to the scene as a result of a disturbance, had at some point been exposed to fentanyl, but it is unknown whether or not they had been knowingly exposed as of 9:30 p.m., according to officials.

“We responded to a call for service at the Home Depot,” said Sergeant Mike Marino with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “One of our deputies had been transported to the hospital due to an overdose.”

An investigation has been initiated to decipher how the exposure had occurred and who is at fault, according to Marino.

The status of the deputy remains unknown as of 10 p.m. Saturday.
