GoFundMe Set Up For Canyon Country 14-Year-Old With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Disabled and confined to a wheelchair as a result of a Duchene muscular dystrophy diagnosis, a Canyon County 14-year-old is in need of the funding necessary for accessible transportation.

In mid-December, the family of Carmen Jeanette Mendoza Navarro had reached out to the Santa Clarita public for help paying for transportation that would enable her son, affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to safely travel outside of their home.

“His family’s van went out right after Thanksgiving and they do not have a safe way to transport him anymore,” read a statement from the family’s GoFundMe. “He needs a van that can take him in his chair to and from school, his doctors’ appointments, and out in the community.”

Jesus, who fractured his femur four years ago, is required to attend children’s hospital visits twice a month, but finding transportation to attend his required visits has become difficult, according to Navarro.

His family’s old van, equipped with accessible features for wheelchair use, had broken down in November and a new van with the necessary features safe for Jesus could cost upwards of $70,000, according to Navarro.

Since the creation of their GoFundMe in mid-December, the family has reached just 1.3 percent of their $40,000 goal to either repair their van or replace it, according to the family’s GoFundMe

Jesus’ hospital visits come after his diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a fatal neuromuscular disease that results in deterioration of the skeletal, heart and lung muscles, according to Parent Project MD.

“The family is grateful for any kind of support, just enough to purchase a safe, reliable, used van,” read a statement from the family’s GoFundMe. “If you cannot contribute financially, please consider sharing this page and asking others for support.”
