Fresh Express Recalls Salad Products Amid Listeria Outbreak

Several salad products manufactured by Fresh Express have been recalled amid the same Listeria outbreak that led Dole to recall their salad products.

On Monday, Dec. 28, Fresh Express recalled at least 20 salad and leafy green products after one of the company’s products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium which can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

“To date, a positive sample of Fresh Express Sweet Hearts salad mix has been reported to match the outbreak strain,” said Frank Yiannas, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response. “Fresh Express has voluntarily recalled products and consumers are advised not to eat, sell or serve any recalled products.”

Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis infection. Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the FDA.

More severe symptoms include a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, FDA representatives said.

For those who are elderly, very young or immune-compromised, listeriosis can lead to death, according to the FDA.

At least 10 illnesses, 10 hospitalizations and one death have been caused by this particular listeria outbreak since July of 2016, FDA officials said.

One death has also been reported, according to the FDA.

The products that have been recalled are those produced at Fresh Express’s Streamwood, Illinois facility, which has been affected by the Listeria strain.

Fresh Express manufactures products for brands including Fresh Express, Marketside, Weis, Simply Nature, Signature Farms, O Organics, Little Salad Bar, Giant Eagle and Market District, according to the recall announcement released by the company.

All production at the Streamwood facility was immediately stopped when the Listeria strain was found in the company’s salad mix.

Retailers and consumers have been instructed to discard the recalled products.

Refunds are available to consumers who purchased salads or greens that are now recalled, either from the place of purchase or from the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center.

“We will continue to work with our partners and with Fresh Express to determine the source of this outbreak,” Yiannas said. “We remain committed to transparency and providing updates as we learn more during our continuing traceback investigation.”
