Community Raises Traffic Safety Concerns At Castaic Meeting

On Saturday, the Castaic Lions Club hosted a Castaic state of the city meeting where county representatives and local land developers shared updates and heard feedback from the community.

Among those in attendance were Los Angeles Supervisor Kathryn Barger and Mayor Bill Miranda.

The issue of traffic safety in Castaic was raised as an increase in accidents along certain roads has caused concerns among residents.

“To say that I was heartbroken to hear about the tragic accidents that occurred and Sloan Canyon Road would be putting it mildly,” said one of the hosts of the event. “This community should not have to live in fear that this road is unsafe.”

In August, a teenage girl was killed in a rollover crash that occurred on the 28000 block of Sloan Canyon Road, in the same area where a vehicle overturned and collided with a house in a fiery crash in September.

During the meeting, it was revealed that Los Angeles County has come to an agreement to accept the western portion of Sloan Canyon Road into their system of highways, which allows for traffic safety studies to be carried out.

The data collection field work is scheduled to begin next week to determine speed limits and warning signs, according to officials at the meeting.

“These studies will be ongoing and we anticipate that the incremental solutions will be developed as a complete traffic study,” said one of the hosts.

It was also announced that there are projects underway to address traffic conditions on the Old Road that includes the demolition and replacement of two bridges over the Santa Clara River and abandoned railroad tracks.

The project is also expected to widen the Old Road from Lake Hughes Road to Hillcrest Parkway from two to four lanes, according to officials at the meeting.

The Old Road project is estimated to be finished by 2023, with construction scheduled to begin this year.
