California Students Required To Get Vaccinated, To Affect Santa Clarita Schools

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Friday that all students across California public schools are required to get vaccinated in order to step foot onto school campuses.

During a press conference broadcasted to his social media Friday morning, Newsom made the major announcement that would affect all California public school students in an ongoing effort to “protect students and school employees who have returned to full, in-person instruction this school year.”

“California will require our kids to get the COVID-19 vaccine to come to school,” Newsom said during the conference. “That’s why we are here today: a state-wide requirement for all in-person students to add to a well-established list that currently includes a list of ten vaccinations that have been advanced by the legislator for decades. To add to that list the vaccination for COVID-19.”

The decision comes as California continues to remain at the lowest coronavirus case rate in the United States, which has been driven primarily by one of the nation’s leading vaccinations, according to Newsom.

“We were the first state to stand up and broaden a commitment to zero cost vaccinations, testing and an amount of resources to prepare the state to reopen our schools,” Newsom said. “We know there is no substitute for in-person instruction, but we need to do this on a sustainable basis.”

As of Friday, at least 84% of all eligible Californians have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine and 63.5% of those ages 12 to 17 have been vaccinated, according to Newsom.

“We’re all left wondering what lies ahead of us in the winter and in the spring,” Newsom said. “We’re still struggling to get where we need to go and that means that we need to do more and we need to do better.”

Under the vaccination requirement, all students from elementary level to high school, between the ages 12 to 17, would be required to get vaccinated after official approval from the FDA, according to Newsom. Exemptions are expected for medical and religious beliefs.

The hope is that the mandatory vaccination requirements go into effect no sooner than July 1, 2022 to minimize disruptions during this school year.

The vaccination requirement is expected to go into place following FDA approval.
