On Tuesday, Aug. 24, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) announced an air quality advisory warning due to wildfire smoke for those in areas like Santa Clarita, the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.
An air quality advisory warning was issued by South Coast AQMD this week due to wildfire smoke, affecting areas like the Santa Clarita Valley.
“Wildfires in northern and central California are producing heavy smoke that is being transported into the South Coast Air Basin and the Coachella Valley,” the South Coast AQMD warning reads. “While heavy smoke will be present in the upper atmosphere across the region, the greatest impacts on surface air quality are expected in mountain areas, the Inland Empire, and the Coachella Valley.”

Smoke levels in the air are said to be expected to increase this week and, as of Tuesday, the highest PM2.5 (particulate matter) levels were reportedly seen in mountain areas such as the Santa Clarita Valley, according to South Coast AQMD officials.
In certain of these affected areas, Air Quality Index (AQI) values of ‘Unhealthy’ and ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ have been observed, according to officials.
Smoke impacts are reportedly expected to continue to be felt until at least Thursday morning, according to officials. In regions affected by smoke, the AQI may continue to reach ‘Unhealthy’ levels or higher until at least Thursday morning, officials stated.
Areas of poor air quality and direct impact may include parts of:
- Los Angeles County: East San Gabriel Valley (Area 9), Pomona-Walnut Valley (Area 10), Santa Clarita Valley (Area 13), San Gabriel Mountains (Area 15)
- Riverside County: Corona-Norco (Area 22), Metropolitan Riverside County (Area 23), Perris Valley (Area 24), Lake Elsinore (Area 25), Temecula Valley (Area 26), Anza Valley (Area 27), Hemet-San Jacinto Valley (Area 28), San Gorgonio Pass (Area 29), Coachella Valley (Area 30), East Riverside County (Area 31)

The inhalation of fine particulate matter can potentially lead to cardiovascular and respiratory health effects including coughing or difficulty breathing, asthma aggravation, heart attacks or decreased lung function, and could even lead to premature death in those with lung or heart disease, according to South Coast AQMD officials.
Residents of affected areas are encouraged to monitor air quality levels and take action as needed. For more information on advisories, click here.
