Despite everything that is going on in the country, the Santa Clarita housing market is as competitive as ever. Sales of existing homes are, in fact, up by 20% year over year according to the 2021 State of the Nation’s Housing Report. While buying a house is without any doubt a great achievement, it may require a bit of added effort to turn it into a home. Here are a few tips on how to transform your new house into a space that feels like your own.
Make comfort a priority
In order for a house to feel like a home, it has to provide comfort to the people that live in it. Comfort is even more important if there are young children in the family. Moving house can be somewhat unnerving for them but being surrounded by warmth and comfort can help them settle in much faster. Even if style is of the utmost importance to you, it is still possible to make your house comfortable by investing in a selection of furniture such as beds, couches, and chairs that are both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. Cold, bare floors can also make a house feel very uninviting. Add some warmth and tranquility by adding a few plush rugs and throws underfoot.
Lighting makes a mammoth difference
There is nothing quite as uninviting as a dark and dreary house. While you may not be able to have a say in where the windows and doors in your house are located, there is a lot you can do to maximize the lighting in the house. By simply opening your curtains during the day you can let natural light in that will definitely negate at least some of the dreariness. If you want to be able to easily adjust the flow of natural light into your house, consider installing corded mini blinds that allow you to do just that while also providing optimal privacy. Replacing any incandescent light bulbs with LEDs will also make your house appear naturally brighter. If your walls are dark in color you may also benefit by giving them a new coat of paint in a lighter, brighter color. Splashes of bright color can also be added in the form of wall art, scatter cushions, and rugs.
Choose personal over trends
When decorating a new house it is extremely easy to get caught up in all the latest decorating trends. While you may end up with a house that looks like it belongs in Architectural Digest, it may not exude the level of comfort a family home should have. Place less focus on what is considered trendy and more on what will bring joy to the people living in the house. Personalize your spaces by placing meaningful items throughout the house. Good things to consider include framed photos, books, artwork your children created, antiques, and other collectables you have accumulated over the years.
Buying a house is by far one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. Turning your house into a home, however, may very well turn out to be one of the most rewarding.
