The Main In Newhall To Host Two Opera Shows In September

Two opera shows, “El Telefono” and “The Old Maid and the Thief” are set to showcase at The Main in Newhall in September.

Organized by Mission Opera, the two shows center around the theme of obsession, with El Telefono described as a “light comedy about our obsession with connection.”

It revolves around a young G.I. who has been drafted but wants to propose to his girlfriend before going to service. He quickly gets upset when he cannot seem to get her off the phone long enough to propose.

The second show, the Old Maid and the Thief is a “dark comedy about our obsession with obsession.”

Created originally as a radio opera in 1939, The Old Maid and the Thief is about two women vying for the attention of a man suspected of being an escaped convict, and go to absurd lengths to win his heart.

The Old Maid and the Thief will be performed in English with Spanish subtitles while El Telefono will be sung in Spanish with English subtitles.

The shows are set to be scheduled for the second weekend of September. Showtimes include Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 2 p.m.

General admission is $30 and $25 for students and seniors. Tickets can be bought here.
