Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Offers Free Safety Tool For People With Special Needs

In partnership with the City of Santa Clarita and the Community and Law Enforcement Aware Response (CLEAR) Initiative, the SCV Sheriff offers a database where residents of Santa Clarita can register themselves or family members with special needs.

When a parent, child or friend wanders away or is in the middle of a crisis, loved ones worry about their safety, especially once found by law enforcement. This is an emergency situation where additional information about your loved one would be useful to deputies, according to Sheriff’s officials.

This database is a tool for law enforcement to help people with special needs remain safe and return them to their homes. This tool is designed for Santa Clarita community members with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alzheimer’s or Dementia, Bipolar Disorder, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, and other conditions.

“SCV residents are invited to proactively provide information about a loved one with special needs of any age, who may require special assistance in an emergency or interaction with first responders. Deputies can access the information in the secure database when needed to assist residents with special needs,” states the SNR website.

When families or caregivers voluntarily register an individual with special needs in the SNR, it is set to give law enforcement access to:

  • A photograph, description and contact information for the person with special needs.
  • Information needed to find those who wander away from home or get lost.
  • Information of special medical, safety and behavioral concerns of individuals with disabilities or medical conditions
  • Awareness of accommodations that may be needed in interacting with the person.

“When you’re in a panic over a missing loved one, getting pictures and physical descriptions is overwhelming. I would encourage anyone who cares for a person with special needs–young or old– to register their loved ones. Important information can be shared immediately with all law enforcement,” said Dianna Poetker, a special needs mother in Santa Clarita, on a Facebook post by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The information provided is to be instantly available to authorized members of the sheriff’s department for use in the event of an emergency. The profiles created need to be updated every two years or they can be deleted, ensuring all information is as accurate as possible.
