Santa Clarita Olympian Allyson Felix Breaks Record For Most Medals For Female Track Athlete

The record for most medals for a female track athlete was broken by Olympian Allyson Felix, who is from Santa Clarita.

Felix defied expectations and broke the record by winning her tenth medal and first bronze, in the 400-meter race at the Tokyo Olympics Friday.

By earning the award, Felix beat the record set by nine-time Olympic medalist and female track athlete Merlene Ottey.

She also tied with Carl Lewis’ record of most medals earned by a U.S. track and field athlete.

Paavo Nurmi of Finland, a 1920s Olympic track athlete, maintains the record for most Olympic medals for a track athlete with 12 medals.

At 35 years old, Felix said people questioned if she would even make the U.S. team and had not expected her to earn any medals.

The Tokyo Olympics are the fifth Olympic Games the mother of one has attended.

Felix won a silver medal at the 2004 games in Athens, then won gold and silver in Beijing in 2008.

In the London 2012 games, she won a whopping three gold medals and snagged another gold and a silver at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

In total, Felix holds 10 medals. Six of the medals are gold, three are silver, and one is bronze.

Even before winning bronze in Tokyo, Felix was the only female Olympic athlete to ever win six gold medals.

The sprinter may have a chance to win another medal in Tokyo at the 4×400 relay Saturday.
