Man Arrested After Leaving Illegally Owned Firearm In Santa Clarita Hotel

A man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly left an illegally owned firearm in a Santa Clarita hotel room.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, deputies received reports of a firearm that was left in a hotel room in the 27900 block of Pico Canyon Road in Stevenson Ranch, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“When a deputy received a call for service regarding a firearm left behind in a hotel room, he was quick to respond,” Arriaga said.

It was later determined that the owner of the firearm was attempting to retrieve it, according to Arriaga.
As the deputy examined the firearm left behind, he observed it to be a handgun with an extended magazine and no serial number, making illegal, according to Sheriff’s officials.
“The male was also found to be in possession of additional contraband believed to be stolen,” Arriaga said.

Maurice Mathis, 19, from Fresno was arrested on felony gun charges, Arriaga added.

Mathis was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with bail set at $0, according arrest records.
