Garcia Announces Award Of $1.4 Million For College Of The Canyons STEM Students

On Wednesday, Congressman Mike Garcia, R- Santa Clarita, announced the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) award of $1,493,379.00 to the College of the Canyons (COC).

The NSF’s award to COC of about $1.4 million was announced by Congressman Garcia’s office this week.

“Ensuring our community has access to quality and affordable education is one of my top priorities,” Garcia said. “I am pleased that the National Science Foundation is investing in the College of the Canyons, located here in California’s 25th District.”

The funding is slated to support an NSF project entitled “Improving Educational Outcomes at Two-Year Colleges through Mentorship, Support Services, and Equitable Classroom Practices,” according to officials with Garcia’s office.

COC reportedly seeks to increase graduation rates and enrollment among STEM majors within student populations that are underrepresented, including first-generation, low-income, female and Black students, according to NSF officials.

For talented STEM students who complete scholarship applications and demonstrate financial need, the project’s funding is set to be allotted to providing these students with two-year scholarships, according to NSF officials.

“This funding will help provide quality education to Californians in the 25th District who are on the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career path,” Garcia said. “I thank the National Science Foundation for their investment in the next generation.”

The NSF project builds upon COC’s Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program, designed to provide STEM students with academic, social and cultural capital access.
