Five Deaths In Five Days: Henry Mayo’s Coronavirus Death Rate Surges


Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital reported five coronavirus-related deaths within the span of five days, marking Santa Clarita’s highest coronavirus death rate in just one week since February. 

On Friday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital reported another COVID-19 related death, bringing the hospital’s total number of deceased patients to 159, according to Spokesperson Patrick Moody. 

During the months of April and May, Henry Mayo had not reported any additional coronavirus-related deaths until June when three deaths were reported within the span of one month. 

Five coronavirus-related deaths were reported at Henry Mayo in July, followed by eight deaths in August, as of Saturday afternoon, bringing Henry Mayo’s overall death toll to 160 since the beginning of the pandemic.

One death was reported on Aug. 23, one on Aug 24, two on Aug. 26 and another on Aug. 27, according to officials.

Any personal information of the deceased patients, including the ages, has not been made available to the public by Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

“To the many people experiencing the sadness of losing a loved one to COVID-19, we are deeply sorry for your loss,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. “This virus continues to cause serious, life-threatening illness among many who are infected and the differences in death rates between unvaccinated and vaccinated people are stark.”

The Santa Clarita coronavirus death rate comes at a time where students across L.A. County has made a return to in-person schooling which has so far resulted in 14 school outbreaks, including outbreaks among the Castaic and West Ranch High School cheer teams in Santa Clarita.

“It’s looking especially that schools are going to be closing down. The cases at my school are going up drastically,” said Valencia High School student Christopher Negrone in Tuesday’s city council meeting

In K-12 school settings countywide over the week of Aug. 16 through 22, 3,186 new cases were reported, many from LAUSD, where everyone is tested weekly, with the second-highest number coming from other K-12 schools in L.A. County, according to Public Health officials.

The overwhelming majority of school sites with cases reported only one case. However, 15 LAUSD and 48 other school sites reported 2 cases, and 84 LAUSD and 39 other school sites reported 3 or more cases, according to Public Health. 

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 30 new deaths and 2,789 new coronavirus cases across L.A. County on Friday. 

Of the 30 new deaths across L.A. County reported, nine people were over the age of 80, eight people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, 10 people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64, and two people were between the ages of 30 and 49, according to Public Health. 

To date, Public Health identified 1,397,236 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 25, 211 deaths, according to Public Health.

In total, the Santa Clarita Valley has experienced at least 301 deaths due to coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
