Top 5 Careers In Sport You Can Take Up After High School

So you’ve just finished high school, and you’re looking into a career in sports, one that does not necessarily involve being a professional athlete. If you are this person, this article is for you!

Becoming a pro-athlete or star sportsperson seems the most logical thing to do if you are gifted, but there is much more to sport; there are plenty of opportunities for non-sportsmen too. An excellent place to start your explorative journey would be the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.

Someone, or a team, was behind selecting tournament dates, choosing the Euro 2020 host cities, looking for and managing venues, promoting the matches, etc. Soccer is big business worldwide. Also take a look at host countries and the preparation they’ve put in to attract spectators and advertise their stadia and general tourism in the cities the matches will be played. A lot of job opportunities present themselves when such big tournaments are happening; let’s take a look.

1. Sports Statistician

If you are a math whiz who also loves sports, this one’s for you. A Sports Statistician records and analyses data about players or whole teams. The information we get in the media about players’ average passes, fouls they commit and other general information about their form, comes from these guys. You have to have an analytical mind,  pay attention to detail and be a meticulous record keeper. Your ability to analyse and interpret data is also very pertinent to this role. You will need to have a degree in Mathematics or Statistics for this job. Very unique work for the Mathematician, we think.

2. Sports Photographer

Monetising a passion has never presented itself so sweetly! Your love for photography and and your zeal for sport can be combined. While it may be relatively easy to break into the industry, capturing moments that are worthwhile whilst being different from the other photographers is really what will set you apart. As simple as it is to pick up a camera and as much as you love it, your pictures have to have that ‘it’ factor for you to make a living off this work. The best advantage is that you get front row seats to sporting events. Be sure when picking this career that you do have what it takes; passion is not enough. Working with established photographers in the field will go a long way in assisting your development. Watch and learn, practice and practice some more till you become a legend.

3. Umpire / Referee

This individual is expected to have a non-partisan view of the games being played. They are the neutral party, ensuring that everyone is following the rules of the game and that any act going against the rulebook is noted and immediately addressed. To be an Umpire or Referee, you need extensive knowledge of the sport and rules thereof, a cool head and general fairness. Depending on the sport, a level of fitness is also important. This role is one of the less popular ones, but its importance cannot be undermined.

4. Physical Education Teacher

In a world where obesity has become an issue, a P.E Teacher’s role has never been more critical. It may not be as glamorous as the other work, but it is very important. A love for teaching and a devotion to sports are where one should start in considering this work, and then the relevant qualifications can be obtained to make it official. You get to choose what age group you would like to work with and who knows? You may well develop a star athlete. Definitely a career worth pursuing!

5. Sports Reporter

If journalism and media are your thing, coupled with a love for sports – this career choice is for you. You will need to know absolutely everything (or close to everything) about the sport, including players, rules of the game, statistics about the players and other interesting tidbits about both player and sport. This career also needs you to be a conversationalist, an engaging but not abrasive person – able to ask the right questions and draw out information from interviewees. You will also need to be a quick thinker to engage the viewer and make a name for yourself. A degree in Journalism is where it all begins.

We have given you just a few of some careers you can pursue that are not the mainstream ones; hopefully, it is enough to stir your curiosity to do a little research to find one best suited to you if our list has not covered it.
