Supervisor Barger Opposes Two Motions For ‘Guaranteed Income’

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Los Angeles County’s Fifth District, which includes Santa Clarita, opposed two motions Tuesday that would allow for “guaranteed income.”

During the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday Barger voted against a motion authored by Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Sheila Kuehlt that passed which is set to pay $1,000 a month to 1,000 of the most vulnerable residents in L.A. County, according to the motions.

“I am deeply concerned about the motions approved by the Board of Supervisors today to guarantee a basic income for an unspecified group of individuals over a period of at least three years,” Barger said. “Implementation of ‘Guaranteed Basic Income’ has yet to be fully researched and vetted in a jurisdiction comparable to ours.”

The Guaranteed Income Program is expected to provide a financial boost to the pilot’s target population. While the pilot’s target population is not yet fully determined, the groups may include women living at or below the poverty level who were released from incarceration in the last seven years, transition-age youth head of households, and or the head of households who survived domestic violence, according to the county’s meeting

agenda.

“As the largest County in the nation, we should be more diligent, thoughtful and strategic before we implement a program of this nature,”  Barger said.
