Supervisor Barger Discusses Updated COVID-19 Rules For Santa Clarita Valley, L.A. County

On Friday, Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Los Angeles County’s fifth district, which includes Santa Clarita, issued a statement on recent COVID-19 pandemic updates published by California’s Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.

A statement was issued on Friday by Barger regarding California’s Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly and his latest updates on the coronavirus pandemic guidelines.

“I am pleased that the California Health and Human Services Department has provided an update regarding the proposed changes to the COVID-19 protocols that will likely begin on June 15,” Barger said regarding the state’s latest guidelines.

The updates Barger listed on pandemic protocols include:

  • Elimination of capacity limits and physical distancing requirements for businesses.
  • Alignment with the Centers for Disease Control on the guidance for masking and travel
  • Recommendations for vaccine verification to help protect and support businesses and organizations

“I support full alignment with the State on this guidance and appreciate that today’s announcement will provide ample time for our businesses, organizations and residents to prepare for these changes,” Barger said. “In Los Angeles County, we have fully vaccinated approximately 47 percent of our population and continue to make the vaccine available and easily accessible for all our residents – including those in hard to reach communities.”

Barger previously noted that L.A. County would not be able to change local mask mandates until the state loosens regulations to match new CDC guidance allowing fully vaccinated Americans to go without masks in most situations.

“We are seeing real results in the significantly diminished case counts and the lack of community transmission,” Barger said. “I am confident in the State and Federal scientific experts developing these recommendations, knowing that this is a safe next step for our communities.”

California recently reported one of the lowest COVID-19 positivity rates in the nation at 1.0 percent, according to the California state COVID-19 dashboard website.

Despite the low rates, the CDC still urges fully vaccinated people to wear well-fitted masks when it is required by federal, state or local laws, as well as on private property by businesses, according to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

“We have weathered the storm and I am hopeful that this finally signals our return to normalcy,” Barger said.
