Sulphur Springs School District Board Opposes Controversial Sand Canyon Hotel, Resort Project

The Sulphur Springs Union School District Board of Trustees objected to the construction of the Sand Canyon Hotel and Resort in the Sand Canyon neighborhood of Santa Clarita last Wednesday.

On June 23, the Sulphur Springs Union School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution opposing the construction of the Sand Canyon Hotel and Resort, aligning itself with many disgruntled residents of the area, according to the Sand Canyon Homeowners Association (SCHOA).

“We’re delighted that the school district is doing that because they’re very credible,” said SCHOA Board President Ruthann Levison. “Of course they have a big concern because of how traffic on Lost Canyon could affect kids.”

The Board of Trustees listed fire evacuation concerns, traffic issues, an upending of Sand Canyon’s “rural lifestyle” and a violation of the Sand Canyon Special Standard District, which aims to preserve the character of Sand Canyon, as reasons why they are against the construction.

The board resolved to oppose the Sand Canyon Resort and Hotel project and oppose the rezoning of 300 acres of open space to community commercial, officials said.

The proposed resort has been a point of contention for some residents of Sand Canyon, represented by the SCHOA, who cite concerns about safety and the precedent rezoning the area might create.

The construction of the resort is expected to result in lane closures on main roads in Sand Canyon, making evacuation during fires especially difficult for people living in the semi-rural community, residents said in previous Planning Commission meetings.

Zoning requirements currently in place preserve much of the land in Sand Canyon as open space, including the plot of land the resort would be built on.

This open space was promised to residents of Sand Canyon “in perpetuity”, according to officials.

The new construction threatens to override the Grant of Open Space, turning a portion of the space into a commercial zone.

“It’s a warning bell ringing for the rest of the entire Santa Clarita Valley,” Levinson said. “The whole valley has open space and if it can be taken away by a developer, they’re pulling the wool over our eyes.”
