Santa Clarita City Council Meeting Recap: Human Relations Roundtable, Threat To KHTS Staff

The Santa Clarita City Council discussed the Human Relations Roundtable controversy as well as a threat to KHTS staff during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

During the meeting Tuesday, the Santa Clarita City Council covered a range of topics including concerns about a lack of community input in the Human Relations Roundtable and the actions of KHTS Staff when a man brandished a knife at the station.

Towards the beginning of the council meeting, Mayor Bill Miranda clarified the purpose of the Human Relations Roundtable after public comments alluded to a possible lack of community input within the organization.

“The Human Relations Roundtable is not an official city committee,” said Miranda during the meeting. “Our intent is to ask for advice from the Roundtable and listen to different demographics within our community. Our intention was not to promote anything other than harmony and inclusion.”

The clarification follows the discussion of the potential removal of the Hart High School mascot, which has recently been the subject of controversy, according to Miranda.

Several concerned comments were brought up by the public during the meeting that the Roundtable should address all community issues in front of the public, including the future of the Hart mascot.

“I apologize on behalf of myself being the Chair of the Roundtable for not getting the message out clearly to all those either inside or outside the Roundtable,” said Miranda. “I view them as an advisory group.”

The members of the Roundtable attend and engage in meetings, subcommittee meetings and activities to encourage and assist the Santa Clarita community to eliminate all forms of racism and discrimination, according to a previous KHTS article.

These events are said to promote inclusion and not only an understanding but an appreciation of human differences, according to the Santa Clarita City Council.

The City Council also briefly discussed an incident which occured at KHTS Radio last Wednesday morning during which an armed drunk man displayed a knife to KHTS staff and customers.

“Last week we had a very scary situation that took place that I think could have gone a completely different direction if it wasn’t diffused by two young Santa Clarita residents,” said councilman Jason Gibbs.

The councilman went on to describe how by working together, co-news directors Jade Aubuchon and Louie Diaz were able to escort the man, who refused to leave the station, out of the establishment.

The fate of the Hart mascot has not been decided as of Tuesday and the Human Relations Roundtable does not have the authority to make any final decisions, officials said.
