Santa Clarita Burger King Businessman Announces Retirement

Long-time Santa Clarita resident and philanthropic businessman Dave Wurts has announced his retirement from his locally-owned Burger King location on Lyons Avenue.

After 43 years of owning the Newhall Burger King, Wurts has announced his retirement with a long and prosperous career behind him.

At the age of 19, Wurts got his start as the night manager and was quickly promoted to general manager for his leadership skills and commitment.

Wurts has owned the Burger King on Lyons Avenue since 1978, building his second Burger King in 1994, the second Burger King ever to be built at two stories tall to house an indoor playground.

Throughout his career, Wurts has been known as a giving and selfless contributor to the community, always having his Santa Clarita family’s back.

“Dave Wurts has always been one of the first to call in the event of an emergency, whether it be an earthquake, fire, or pandemic lockdown, always asking how to assist with his fantastic burgers. He is a giver and constantly looking for more ways to support other businesses and organizations. He will be missed in this community,” said Jeri Seratti-Goldman, Co-owner of KHTS Radio.

In 2016, Wurts’ converted his Newhall Ranch Road-Bouquet Canyon Burger King franchise into a rental property, becoming the landlord to the Starbucks that now stands there today. Though Wurts plans on selling his Lyons branch, at the moment he will remain the landlord for Starbucks.

Wurts and his staff were known for their extreme service and hospitality. During the 1994 earthquake, Wurts’ family and staff made over 9,987 sandwiches to assist the Red Cross, displaced people, and first responders, a tradition they continue today.

Also in his future plans include a trip to his son’s wedding and a much-anticipated trip to Disney World for Wurts, who calls himself a Disney fanatic or “in this age I would be called a fanboy” he said in an interview with KHTS staff.

In the interview with KHTS, Wurts stated that the highlight of his career has been working with his staff. His long-term relationship with his staff has been one of his favorite experiences, having staff work with him for 20-30 years has been a great honor, to watch each other all get married, have kids, and some of these kids even come to join the team as well.

According to Wurts, it has been his greatest honor to have a staff that is also like family. He emphasized the attitude of teamwork, reliability, and comradery that he will surely miss as he branches into this new chapter of his life.

Wurts’ final piece of advice to young entrepreneurs and those starting their careers is to follow your dreams with passion in your hearts.
