Governor Newsom Announces California To Pay Off All Past-Due Rent

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday the state’s intention to pay off all past-due rent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, including those in Santa Clarita.

As the federal moratorium and other state and local rent protection programs are expected to expire at the end of this month, lawmakers in California are attempting to create legislation that would cover 100% of all past-due rent for eligible tenants.

“California is planning rent forgiveness on a scale never seen before in the United States,” tweeted Newsom on Monday, attributing the tweet to an article by the New York Times.

Earlier this month a team of researchers at Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies predicted a wave of evictions in the coming summer months as the federal moratorium on rent is set to expire on June 30.

According to a Census survey conducted between May 26th and June 7th, 2021 4.2 million Americans reported that they are “very likely” or “somewhat likely” to be evicted or face foreclosure in the next two months.

California has about $5.2 billion from federal aid packages approved by Congress to pay off people’s rent, which is predicted to be enough to cover it all.

While lawmakers attempt to pass legislation that would allow them to use the money for rent coverage, it is unclear whether California will extend its moratorium beyond June 30.

Newsom has said that he is in favor of extending eviction protections past June 30. Housing advocates have also asked that the eviction protection stay in place until unemployment rates drop to pre-pandemic levels.
