Get Your Pup Prepped For Summer Fun

Summer is here and so is the hot, hot summer sun! Southern California has certainly lived up to its reputation thus far this year, with temperatures sitting in the high 90’s and frequent spikes into the 100’s.

Summer means fun for the whole family, including the four-legged members! While there are many dangers of the heat to be aware of, it can also be a fun and exciting time.

Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Vet spoke with the Hometown Morning Show on July 6, reviewing some dangers as well as fun things to remember this summer.

Dr. Ronchetto says that one question she often gets is folks wondering if pools or lakes are safe for their dogs. Though many breeds of dogs are natural swimmers who absolutely love the water, every dog is different. Dr. Ronchetto emphasized the importance of introducing your dog to the water slowly to ensure they do know how to swim as well as measuring their comfort level.

Another factor to consider when deciding whether or not your dog can be allowed in the pool or lake is to determine how easily the pup can exit the pool without assistance or whether there are any strong currents or pumps. If you dog cannot exit the pool without assistance, it is recommended not to let them swim unsupervised.

A handy tool you can purchase is something very common for people to use as well. To improve the safety of your pup, you can purchase them a life jacket for dogs. Just like humans, dog life jackets come in different sizes based on the dog’s weight and size. Make sure to try the jacket on your dog before releasing them to have some fun in the sun.
