An armed teen was arrested on suspicion of felony robbery Tuesday, after he allegedly stole a cellphone and money from another juvenile on a playground in Santa Clarita.
Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to the 23700 block of Valle Del Oro in Newhall regarding a robbery that had just occurred, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Upon arrival, deputies learned the subject approached the (juvenile) victim while he was in the playground and grabbed a cellphone the victim was carrying in hand,” Arriaga said.
While the victim pleaded for his phone back, the suspect allegedly displayed a black handgun in a threatening manner, according to Arriaga.
“The subject then walked away from the victim, while removing the cellphone case off the cellphone to recover money stored within the cellphone case,” Arriaga said.
After the suspect removed the phone from the case, he threw the phone back at the victim, and left the location, with money in hand.
“During investigation, deputies learned the subject possibly lived within the apartment complex,” Arriaga said. “A search was conducted in which a male matching the suspect description was located.”
The suspect was positively identified as the subject during a field identification.
The 16-year-old was ultimately detained for felony robbery, according to Arriaga.
A handgun was recovered during a search of the suspect’s residence, later determined to be a BB gun, Arriaga added.
The suspect was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
