In a Saturday night matchup, the West Ranch Wildcats football team brought home their first win of the season over the Canyon High School Cowboys.
The first score of the night went to West Ranch, with a 27-yard pass to wide receiver Jose Maldonado, who completed a touchdown, snagging six points for the Wildcats.
West Ranch expanded their lead to 13-0 thanks to the second drive of the night, with Walker Eget scoring a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
The Cowboys came back with two field goals from kicker Jarret Reeser, who kicked a 44-yard and 42-yard field goal to bring the score up to 13-6 at the beginning of the second quarter.
Scoring Canyon’s second touchdown of the night, quarterback Ty Sparks completed a 17-yard pass to Colin Figueroa, bringing the score to 13-12.
Reeser then scored Canyon’s third field goal of the night, snagging another point for the Cowboys.
With one minute to go in the second quarter, Derek Miranda completed a rushing touchdown, increasing the lead for the Wildcats to 19-13.
Connor Reyes continued the Wildcats’ lead with a 30-yard return with under a minute left in the second quarter, followed by a field goal made by Richard Padilla, bringing the score to 27-13.
West Ranch continued lengthening their lead in the third quarter, with Eget completing a 23-yard pass to running back Miranda for another touchdown, bringing the score to 33-13 in West Ranch’s favor.
Injuries were a major issue for the Cowboys during Saturday night’s game, with starting quarterback and linebacker Angel Vasquez out of commission. Sparks and (position) James Mendibles both experienced injuries and were unable to return to play, while running back Dylan Roof was ruled out with a stinger.
Sparks once again sent a 5-yard pass to receiver Figueroa, who scored the final touchdown of the night to bring the matchup to 33-19.
The final score for the night of 33-20 brought West Ranch their first win of the season, as well as the third straight loss for the Canyon Cowboys.West Ranch has a matchup against Saugus Centurions on Thursday, April 8, while Canyon is set to face off against the Hart Indians on Friday, April 9.
