Valladares Domestic Violence Bill Unanimously Passes State Assembly

A bill by Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, (R-Santa Clarita), expanding access to domestic violence resources was unanimously passed through the California State Assembly Thursday, making it the first bill introduced by Valladares to be passed by the Assembly.

Assembly Bill 277 (AB 277), which was introduced by assembly members Valladares and Laurie Davies (R-Laguna Niguel) and is now headed to the California State Senate, aims to protect victims of domestic violence by making the application form for Safe at Home program available in all six most commonly used languages in California.

“According to the US Census Bureau, over 40% of Californians speak a language other than English at home,” Valladares said. “AB 277 will require the State to provide the application for the Safe at Home program, as well as the information on domestic violence restraining orders, in the five most common languages other than English.”

The Safe at Home program offers victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking or elder or dependent adult abuse alternate mailing addresses to recieve mail, protecting participants’ addresses and mail from being accessed by those who may wish to harm them.

Currently, the application form for Safe at Home is available in just two languages. This makes the material difficult to read and understand for Californians who are not fluent in either language.

Through AB 277, Valladares says her goal is to increase access to services provided by the state of California for domestic violence victims.

“Providing these services to women who speak a foreign language will save lives,” Valladares said. “I will always fight to keep our community safe, and I will continue to keep you informed on key legislation.”
