Saugus Prevails In Perfect 5-0 Season Against Valencia, Canyon Ends Season Winless Against Golden Valley

Friday night’s matchup saw Saugus end Valencia’s winning streak 21-7, while Canyon missed their final attempt for a win this season against Golden Valley 7-40.

In the final game of the shortened five-game football season, much anticipation was met between both the Centurions(5-0) and Vikings(4-1)who’ve gone all season with straight wins until now. The Grizzlies (2-2-1) were able to end their season on a reasonable note against the Cowboys with an unfortunate (0-5) losing streak.

Friday night’s game between Golden Valley and Canyon opened with a somber remembrance after kickoff to honor the passing of previous football coaches for both teams.

Golden Valley delayed their first play to honor the memory of the late coach Eric Harris, who died in March 2020. Canyon took a delay of game penalty in memory of the late coach Ernie Figueroa, who died in May 2020.

An interception by Canyon on the opening drive only motivated Golden Valley to step up their game, gaining a 47-yard interception touchdown from senior wide receiver Noah Thompson and four consecutive possessions in the first quarter.

Junior Ty Sparks was on top of his offensive game with two interceptions and excessive use of the hard count to draw the Grizzlies offside three times in the second quarter.

A thundering punt by senior Jarret Reeser led Golden Valley to turnover after they fumbled on the 15-yard line. Canyon took advantage of the opportunity and retaliated with a quick 5-yard rushing touchdown from junior running back Dylan Roof.

Quarterback Jaxson Miner maintained the Grizzlies lead with four touchdown passes in the first half, including two touchdown passes to senior wideout Carlos Meza and a 34-yarder to senior Julian Sandoval-Brown.

The Grizzlies didn’t let up in the fourth and final quarter, as Junior running back Noah Rodriguez scored his first touchdown of the game from the one-yard line, reaching the game’s final score of 40-7 against Canyon.

Friday night also saw the introduction of a brand new Foothill League Champion in the Saugus Centurions.

Only one team could come out on top with a perfect record this season, and the Valencia Vikings, who previously held the title for 12 years, lost to the Saugus Centurions 21-7.

Saugus saw an early 7-0 lead thanks to a 40-yard speeding-bullet toss to senior wide receiver Hunter Girch from quarterback Colton Fitzgerald.

The second quarter saw both teams tied up 7-7, but Saugus ensured that was only temporary with a touchdown pass from Fitzgerald to wide receiver Khai Ky-yeith after an eight-play drive.

With Saugus in possession on their own 19-yard line after a lousy Valencia snap, FitzGerald threw a quick pass 6-yards out to tight end Dario Sandoval, racking up the game’s final score at 21-7.

Valencia quarterback Tyler Voss fought for a comeback in the fourth quarter but his multiple attempts to reach the endzone didn’t change the score.

The faceoff couldn’t have been more evenly matched, and both Saugus (5-0) and Valencia (4-1) had an incredible season.
