LASD Community Discussion Announced For Child Abuse Awareness Month

In honor of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva is slated to host a community conversation on April 20, alongside other law enforcement partners.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s (LASD) Alex Villanueva plans to host a community conversation, alongside several other law enforcement partners, on the topic of Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Officials with LASD announced this discussion during the month of April as a way of addressing public concerns about preventing the practice of child abuse.

“Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva will also be hosting a Community Conversation on April 20, 2021, from 1-3pm, alongside Special Victims Bureau Captain Michael Hannemann, Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami, Dr. Karen Imagawa, and Patricia Wenskunas from Crime Survivors to discuss Child Abuse Prevention,” reads a statement by LASD officials.

The Sheriff’s Station is also encouraging the online use of the hashtag #ChildAbuseAwarenessMonth to spread awareness.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services desribes child abuse as “any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation.”

In a statement by LASD officials, the department points out that some signs of potential child abuse that should be observed are unusual bruising, possibly reflecting the shape of an object used to cause the injury, burns, fear to touch, withdrawal from society, changes in behavior, lack of sufficient clothing or food, and several others.

To report child abuse or related activity, contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121, or report child abuse to the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453.

The community conversation is open to the public and is scheduled to occur on Tuesday, April 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Registration is required to join the community conversation.
