UPDATE: (1:00 p.m. 5/1/21) The #1 lane on the I-5 freeway is now open per CHP traffic logs.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call at roughly 4:20 a.m. Saturday morning regarding a big rig transporting asphalt that had snapped in half and spilled 1,000 gallons directly onto the I-5 Freeway near Highway 138.

Units arrived on scene at 5:08 a.m. and issued a SigAlert at 6:48 a.m. for a minimum of three hours to allow the situation to be cleaned up. Northbound traffic was directed away from the 5 and towards the 138.

The liquid hot asphalt had to be sprayed down to keep cool with smoke reportedly fuming from the truck, according to CHP traffic logs.

Cleanup is set to require one more additional hour per CHP’s last update at 11:06 a.m.
