Saugus Union School District Details New ‘Back-To-School’ Plan

During a special meeting, the Saugus Union School District detailed their re-opening plan for schools in the district and voted to keep teachers from forced resignations.

In a board meeting Monday, the Saugus Union School District (SUSD) governing board laid out a detailed back-to-school plan for their scheduled return date of April 19, which is set to allow elementary school children to return to in-person and part-time learning amidst COVID-19 precautions. They also voted to rescind 25 resignation notices that were previously sent to Saugus district teachers.

“These plans will ensure a smooth and safe transition back to school for not only our students but our wonderful staff as well”, said Mary Mann, Principal of Cedarcreek Elementary. “Whether we agree with these regulations or not, these are the rules that we must adhere to and we will do whatever we can to bring the students back to a normal state of learning.”

The back-to-school plan, created by Saugus Superintendent Colleen Hawkins, is a detailed roadmap for the slow transition back to in-person learning for transitional kindergarten up to sixth graders.

Some of the new implementations for COVID-19 safety precautions at SUSD include:

  • separate time slots for recess spread out amongst four separate playgrounds
  • cloth masks will be enforced to be worn whenever the students are not eating or drinking
  • 6 feet social distancing during lunch time
  • Classroom desks spaced out six feet
  • daily symptom checks prior to start of school day
  • a protocol that does not allow classes to mix with other classes.

Wednesdays are also set to be virtual-only days, providing the students a total of 600 minutes of in-person learning per week.

The Governing Board members of the SUSD also rescinded the resignation notices sent to multiple teachers in the district due to COVID-19 budget cuts and smaller capacity classrooms.

During a regular board meeting in early March, the Board approved the implementation of the lay-off procedure commonly referred to as “March 15th Notices”. Due to declining enrollment, a condition that has plagued every district in the area, SUSD needed to lose eight full-time teaching positions for the 2021-2022 school year and distributed notices to approximately 25 teachers to initiate the process.

Following Monday’s unanimous approval, all 25 teachers will have those notices rescinded.

The district worked with its labor partners and leadership to determine the creation of eight new teacher positions on special assignment for the 2021-2022 school year.  These teachers on special assignment are set to implement an intervention program across the district to combat any learning gaps experienced by students as a result of the pandemic.

In-person learning is scheduled to return for SUSD students and teachers on April 19.
