Garcia Co-Sponsors Bill To Promote Science And Technology

Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, recently signed as an original co-sponsor for the Securing American Leadership in Science and Technology Act (SALSTA), which would build funds for promoting research in science and technology.

“It is imperative that we invest in American innovation in science and technology if we want to remain a leader on the global stage and maintain our national security,” Garcia said. “If we do not double-down on our efforts to support basic and early-stage research, the Chinese Communist Party will take the lead – an unacceptable outcome.”

The bill intends to create a long-term strategy for investment that would double funding for basic research and infrastructure over the next 10 years in the technological and scientific fields, with an emphasis on economic and national security.

The added importance of national security would prioritize research in fields such as quantum science, artificial intelligence, supercomputing advanced material and manufacturing and cybersecurity.

“Not only does this bill help us maintain our national security as well as our leadership on the global stage, but it will help us expand our clean energy technologies that would reduce emissions and keep energy prices low,” said Garcia.

Garcia and supporters of the bill hope that it will help to expand the STEM workforce and enhance the “American talent pipeline,” according to a statement Thursday.
