City Council Votes Approves Construction Of Sierra West, MetroWalk Housing Projects

The Santa Clarita City Council opted to approve the project proposals for two separate construction projects for Santa Clarita housing communities during their meeting on Tuesday.

The City Council voted in favor of approving the development of two proposed Santa Clarita construction projects Tuesday evening, the housing community MetroWalk in Canyon Country and the Sierra West assisted living center in Newhall.

The Sierra West assisted living center was approved unanimously, with the amendment that some of the street-facing architecture be added to more fit in aesthetically with Newhall Crossings buildings.

“I do support the facility coming in,” said Councilmember Jason Gibbs. “You know, one of the things I recently read that in, in 2040, in the United States, they expect a tripling of 85 and over residents that live in this country with the advancements of, of healthcare and people living longer, there is going to be a need for senior housing like this. So it is nice to see that it is coming.”

The Sierra West living center is projected to include independent and assisted living options, as well as memory care units, officials said.

Construction has already begun on the project, according to documents.

According to city documents, MetroWalk is planned to be a 498-unit community featuring market-rate apartments, market-rate senior apartments, and affordable senior apartments.

MetroWalk is planned to be located somewhere northwest of the Metrolink tracks and east of Lost Canyon Road in Canyon Country, according to representatives.

A path would connect MetroWalk with the planned Metrolink Vista Canyon Station to the east and the Vista Canyon Specific Plan Project to the north, officials said.

MetroWalk is also set to feature a playground, a clubhouse, and open space, according to the city.

The MetroWalk project was approved unanimously with age restrictions on parking spaces and other exterior designs to be addressed in the future.

“…maybe this is something that City Manager can work with us on this too,” said Councilmember Laurene Weste. “We’re in a new time, or we’ve come out of pandemic, let us work toward how we really want to refine down architectural features, what they’re called, what do we like, what we don’t like, who do we want to do it? And let’s go that direction…”
