Former Assemblymember Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, has announced her intent to run for California’s 25th District Congressional seat after a loss of only 333 votes in her 2020 campaign.

“Last November, 333 votes were the difference between our community having a representative who aligned himself with domestic terrorists — or one who aligns herself with American democracy,” said Smith on her Twitter account Wednesday. “In 2022, 334 votes are all it will take to right that wrong. Join us. Let’s get this done!”
As was written in a previous KHTS article, Christy Smith had previously filed paperwork to run for state assembly, though now Smith has made it clear that she is running for congressional office.
This campaign announcement comes after Smith lost to Mike Garcia due to a mere 333 votes in a close 2020 election run.
“This is not the end result we fought for, but I am proud of the strong, grassroots campaign we ran,” said Smith back during her 2020 concession statement to Garcia. “We exhausted every possible option, and did everything within our power to ensure that every voice in this election was heard. Nonetheless, we came up short.”

During the 2020 elections, data showed that voters registered as either no-party preference or any other political party other than Republican and Democratic tended to vote in favor of Republican candidates like Garcia.
In 2022, however, Smith hopes to win back the hearts and minds of Santa Clarita’s voting population.
Lance Trover, Mike Garcia campaign spokesperson, responded to the announcement with the following statement: “Failed politician Christy Smith is clearly hoping the third time’s a charm, but no matter how many times she runs and how many times she tries to reinvent herself with voters, the facts are clear: Smith supports higher taxes on working families, public funding of her congressional races while defunding our police, and a wide open border, and those are simply not the values of CA-25 families.”
