Alleged ‘No Screaming Policy’ Not Required For California Theme Parks

The California Attractions and Park Association (CAPA) is not asking theme park guests to avoid screaming on park rides, such as those at Six Flags Magic Mountain, to avoid the spread of the COVID-19.

Despite rumors to the contrary, amusement parks in California such as Six Flags Magic Mountain, Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal Studios and Disneyland are not expected to enforce a ‘no screaming’ policy amongst park guests.

“Face coverings along with proper social distancing will help mitigate the effects of shouting,” said Jerry Certonio, Manager of Marketing and Communications at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

In accordance with state reopening guidelines for theme parks, Six Flags Magic Mountain plans to operate at reduced attendance levels in April by using a new reservation system. The park is also implementing extensive safety measures, including several new advanced technology systems to protect guests and employees, officials said.

“The safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority,” said Certonio. “Our safety plan, which was developed in consultation with infectious disease experts, requires guests to wear masks while in the park and on all rides and attractions.”

As amusement parks prepare to re-open again as the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccinations continue, California businesses have been called to limit activities like shouting and raised voices that are known to cause an increased spread of COVID-19, according to the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

However, CAPA officials state that California theme parks can mitigate the effects of shouting through the use of mandatory face coverings and modified seat loading patterns on rides.

The origin of concerns related to the alleged ‘no screaming policy’ appears to be in regards to the microscopic droplets of saliva released from rider’s mouths when they scream; potentially coming into contact with riders in the rear seats.
